Why is Cedar Breaks closed? ›

Cedar Breaks National Monument is open from late May to mid-October. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the visitor center, open mid-June to mid-September, and learn how to visit the monument with minimum impact to the fragile desert environment. Services and roads are usually closed for the winter, due to heavy snow.

While visitors can drive through the park along State Route 148 and visit the overlooks, all hiking trails continue to be inaccessible due to snow levels.

Cedar Breaks National Monument may be one of Utah's best national park secrets. While it's close to Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks, it really doesn't get the foot or vehicle traffic the other two get.

The 5-mile road through Cedar Breaks National Monument offers easy access to the monument's scenic overlooks and trail heads. Allow 30 to 45 minutes to make the drive. Start at the visitor center and nearby Point Supreme for a panoramic view of the amphitheater.

Settlers later called it “Cedar Breaks,” by misidentifying the area's juniper trees as cedars. “Breaks,” is a geographic term to describe a sharp/abrupt change or “break” in topography.

Resting on top of the Colorado Plateau at over 10,000 feet in elevation, a breathtaking view at Cedar Breaks National Monument awaits. Millions of years of sedimentation, uplift, and erosion are carving out this giant amphitheater, that spans some three miles, and is more than 2000 feet deep.

Cedar Breaks contains a variety of hiking trails, many of which are considered easy to moderate. Trails provide access to outstanding viewpoints not visible from the road.

Since its establishment in 1933, Point Supreme Overlook has served as the primary scenic viewpoint for visitors to the rim of the Cedar Breaks Amphitheater. From this point, at 10,350ft, visitors can see the incredible formations created by the weathering and erosion over thousands of years.

Cedar Breaks Park also has a day use area with 41 covered shelters. Day use hours are 6:00am - sunset. Day use fee is $5.00 per vehicle. A valid pass, online payment, or camping reservation is required for entry into Cedar Breaks, Jim Hogg, and Russell Parks.
