Is a 3.7 good enough for dental school? ›

A GPA of 3.7 is generally considered competitive for dental school admissions. However, the average GPA needed can vary depending on the specific school and the number of applications they receive.

The lowest GPA generally considered for dental school admission is around 3.0, but successful applicants often have higher GPAs. Dental schools also evaluate other factors like DAT scores, letters of recommendation, personal statements, and relevant experiences.

What is a Competitive GPA for Dental School? According to data available on their websites, the average overall GPA of accepted students at different dental schools ranges from 3.25 to 3.85 and the average science GPA of accepted students ranges from 3.17 to 3.81.

The academic preparation for dentistry can be intense and demanding. The science courses require a deep understanding of complex concepts, and the workload can be heavy. Balancing studies with other responsibilities, such as part-time work or extracurricular activities, can be challenging.

The highest possible DAT score is 30. However, no one has ever actually achieved this “perfect” score. The ADA notes that there is no specific number of correct answers you need to achieve a particular score.

The average score for acceptance is around 20 AA.

This is just an average though, a quick look at the ADEA Guide to Dental Schools shows that students get accepted with lower scores as well! A good score is 20 AA and should be most students' goal. Scores of 23+ AA are rare and exceptionally competitive.

Improve your DAT score

One of the best ways to compensate for a low GPA is by getting a high score on the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). Although GPA is a crucial factor when it comes to dental admissions, the DAT is a way for applicants to show that they possess the necessary knowledge and skills.

The national freshman enrollment of US dental schools can be expected to have approximately a 7% attrition rate by the time of graduation. The reasons for student withdrawal are evenly divided between personal and academic problems.

The cream of the crop will come in at the 98th percentile or better, with scores of 22-23, putting them in the top 2% of test-takers. While the section scores on the DAT average 17, it is important to note that the Academic Average score required for admittance into most dental schools is 19.
