Building a Healthier, Stronger East Texas

The School of Medicine at The University of Texas at Tyler is unlike any other medical school in the nation. As the first medical school in East Texas, we support our community through innovative, groundbreaking medical training designed to spur innovation through research and improve the quality of patient care.

School of Medicine students receive an exceptional education, thanks to our renowned faculty, state-of-the-art facilities and small class sizes. In the process, you’ll learn to address the unique needs of our region, including those of rural and underserved communities. With a projected critical shortage of physicians serving East Texas, we train our students to step up to the challenge and make a real, positive impact. Through community partnerships, engaging research and our relationship with our main affiliate UT Health East Texas and other regional healthcare systems, you’ll become actively involved in improving the quality of life for our neighbors.

More than launching careers, we are here to build a better future together. We invite you to join us.

Graduate Degrees and Programs

East Texas deserves a service-oriented healthcare workforce that understands its health challenges and needs. That’s what we aim to support in all School of Medicine programs. In addition to the Doctor of Medicine, programs range from high school experiences all the way to clinical and research-focused graduate and post-graduate education.

Doctor of Medicine

In this four-year program, an innovative, community-focused curriculum fosters a vocation of service in our students. Though students receive a well-rounded foundation for any specialty, the MD program focuses on primary care and preventive health.

Residency Programs

Apply to one of our 20 ACGME-approved residency programs and benefit from the unique opportunities available to address some of the region’s most pressing health challenges and develop a specialization in fields like rural family medicine or rural psychiatry.

Fellowships and Internships

Continue your medical education training with one of our nine fellowship and internship programs. We offer valuable subspecialty training and mentorship from experts in fields like sports medicine or child and adolescent psychiatry.

MS in Biotechnology

The Master of Science in biotechnology is a hands-on, laboratory-based graduate degree that equips students with the in-demand skills for a research career in the biotech industry, as well as the knowledge to apply to advanced health professional programs.

Certificate Programs

Strengthen scientific knowledge without the investment of a full degree. Our post-baccalaureate certificates help advance careers by focusing on specific sets of research, clinical or professional skills.

Summer Programs

We strive to spark interest and highlight the pathway toward a career in the health professions. Our high school and undergraduate programs expose future physicians to what the field entails firsthand through shadowing opportunities, mentorship, field trips and more experiences.

Student Perspectives

My decision to attend medical school in East Texas allowed me to have the continued support of family and friends, as well as access to service opportunities within our strong hospital systems and community partners. Attending UT Tyler has allowed me to be a part of a huge step towards meeting the needs of the East Texas community.
