The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day.

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a USDA assisted meal program that provides nutritionally balanced lunches to school-aged children. The VDOE administers the NSLP at the state level, and school divisions operate the program at the local level through agreements with the VDOE.

Families covered by Medicaid in North Carolina and South Carolina will automatically become eligible for free or reduced-price school lunches in the 2022-2023 school year, thanks to a program expansion from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Once all requirements are met, and eligibility determination is complete, a notification via email is sent to the email address provided on the application or form. The email will contain a secure link to view eligibility status as well as an option to print an eligibility letter customized by the school district.
