Former Cox High baseball star Fenwick Trimble named second-team All-American (2024)

COLLEGE BASEBALL

James Madison infielder/outfielder Fenwick Trimble, a former Cox High star, has made the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division I All-America second team.

Virginia catcher Jacob Ference also made the second team.

William & Mary pitcher Nate Knowles and Virginia Tech outfielder Ben Watson both are on the third team.

Fenwick hit .369 with 14 homers, 65 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.

Knowles went 8-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 80 innings.

  • UVA infielder Henry Ford has made the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman All-America first team. The Charlottesville native is hitting .339 with 17 homers, 68 RBIs and 60 runs.

LOCAL BASEBALL

Pilots go to 11-4

Jorsixt Jimenez hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run third inning as the Peninsula Pilots (11-4-0) defeated the Tri-City Chili Peppers 7-4 on Tuesday night at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

COLLEGES

CNU places 15th in all-sports standings

Christopher Newport placed 15th among Division III schools in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures achievement across sports programs. It was the Captains’ fourth top-15 finish, all of which have come since 2017.

Points are awarded based on each school’s finish in NCAA championships, with a maximum of 18 sports contributing to a program’s total, four of which must be men’s basketball and soccer and women’s basketball and soccer.

Johns Hopkins repeated as the champion with 1,090.5 points. CNU had 749.1, led by 73 each from men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and women’s soccer, all of which reached the NCAA quarterfinals.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

SEC/ACC games set for UVA, VT

Virginia will visit Florida and Virginia Tech will host Vanderbilt in this year’s SEC/ACC Men’s Basketball Challenge.Both the Cavaliers and Hokies are scheduled to play their games on Dec. 4.

In the women’s basketball challenge, Virginia Tech will go to Georgia on Dec. 4, while Virginia will play host to Auburn on Dec. 5. Also on Dec. 5, Duke will go to reigning NCAA champion South Carolina, and former Hokies coach Kenny Brooks’ first Kentucky team will go to North Carolina.

COLLEGE TENNIS

ODU men’s coaches earn honors

Old Dominion men’s tennis coach Dominik Mueller has been named Atlantic Region Coach of the Year and the Monarchs’ Othmane Lalami has been selected as Assistant Coach of the Year.

ODU went 20-8, won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and had a doubles team reach the NCAA Championships.

  • Old Dominion women’s tennis player Kira Matushkina has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year. She went 15-7.
  • The UVA women’s tennis team has added Martina Genis Salas of Tarragona, Spain, to its roster. She has been ranked as high as No. 36 in the ITF World Junior Rankings and has won seven junior titles.

LOCAL SOCCER

Lionsbridge, D.C. United U23 tie

Lionsbridge FC played the D.C. United U23 team to a 1-1 draw in a “friendly” Wednesday night at Christopher Newport’s TowneBank Stadium.

The Lions (8-1-1) will return to CNU at 7 Saturday night to meet Northern Virginia FC in a USL League Two Chesapeake Division clash.United scored in the sixth minute, but Louis Beckett’s first Lionsbridge goal pulled the hosts even in the 25th minute.

The Lions used two completely different 11-man lineups in each half, except for goalkeeper John Ermini, and outshot D.C. United 12-8. The Lions hit the crossbar late in the match on a shot that would have put them ahead.

VBCFC falls in Richmond

In the National Premier Soccer League’s Mid-Atlantic Conference, Grove United shut out Virginia Beach City FC 4-0 at the University of Richmond’s Robins Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Gerard Broussard came off the bench and scored twice for Grove, which has two wins, three losses and a draw. Asanda Tom hit a penalty kick, and David Torres added the final goal.

VBCFC fell to 1-4.

Jones II to hold youth camp

Minnesota Vikings defensive end and former Grassfield High standout Patrick Jones II will hold a youth football camp on Tuesday at Grassfield High School.

Strothers’ camp dates set

Former Christopher Newport University star and Menchville boys basketball coach Lamont Strothers will hold his 19th annual summer camp at the Boo Williams Sportsplex.

The dates for the camp are June 17-20, 24-27, July 1-3, 22-26 and July 29-August 1.

GOLF

Serrao wins senior tourney

Steve Serrao of Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond shot back-to-back 2-under-par 70s and birdied the final hole for a three-shot victory at the VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship on Tuesday at Williamsburg Golf Club.

Mike Bulich of Williamsburg Golf Club was one of six golfers to tie for second a 1-under 143.
