R-22 (aka Freon) A refrigerant found in older AC systems. A type of hydro-chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) that is linked to environmental damage to the ozone layer. New AC units no longer use Freon.
R-140A (aka Puron) A new and improved type of refrigerant. It’s a hydro-fluorocarbon (HFC) which does not cause harm to the environment. Newer systems are designed to use Puron. It can absorb more heat than Freon, and is easier on the compressor which makes for increased efficiency and smoother functioning.
SEER (seasonal energy-efficiency rating) The higher the rating, the better. All new air conditioning systems are required to have a SEER of 13 or higher which means they are more efficient, less noisy and have more safety features than their older counterparts.
